Smappee is a cleantech company located in Belgium and specialises in accurately controlling or managing home or business energy consumption. Smappee Infinity is a precise energy management solution developed by the company, that makes it easy to measure actual electricity consumption, solar power, heat and water. The EV Wall, released in January 2021, includes the Infinity system to provide advanced smart charging features; alongside additional features including scheduling techniques to increase solar self consumption. The Smappee EV Wall is today an incredibly intelligent electric car charging station that incorporates both Single Phase 7.2kW and Three Phase 22kW charging. It consists of three CT used in energy measurement, monitoring smart solar charging and dynamic load management hub. This design is designed as an infinite system increaseable to 28 circuits with appliance level data. What’s more, users become independent and can control how excess solar energy is supplied to the EV Wall charger, batteries or any Smart load. The EV wall system is also interoperable with IoT products, receives over-the-air updates, and can be started and allows for payments via QR code or RFID (card activation).
The UK made Zappi V2 charger from Myenergi is one of the smartest and most popular EV chargers on the market. It’s a clever device with three different charging modes, eco, eco+ and fast. It can also be set up as a single-phase or 3-phase charger with 1 phase charging rate from 1.4kW to 7kW and 3 phase from 4.1kW to 22kW. The major feature to note here is that this will most likely pull the majority of the power that the charger uses to charge your EV from your integrated solar power instead of grid power. If Eco+ is selected, the Zappi charger regulates the charging power actively and takes no additional power from the grid, if there is excess solar power. Therefore, you don’t pay if in rainy season or if we produce more energy than you consume in your household. Regardless of solar energy or whether you're using your car in the house, Zappi will charge your car to optimum capability in Fast mode. It also uses wireless 'Current Transformer' (CT) energy monitoring data different with is wireless sensor, Harvi. Whether CT is purchased or not is separate to the product unit being sold (‘Harvi’), and are not installed when the product unit is disposed of.
The Anderson A2 smart EV charger is very stylish and quite a well designedagger for quality and function. It encompasses solar only charging, smart scheduling and dynamic load-balancing features. Available in 7.0kW single phase, or 22kW 3 phase with adjustable current setting and monitoring through the smart Konnect app. While the enclosure and machining is high quality, the colour and cover options available with this one are vast, which really set this charger apart from the competition. The unique design also integrates the cable and connector inside a seamlessly integrated cavity. The only downside is that it's not available in the U.S. or elsewhere.
UK based EV charger manufacturer EO is one of the leading companies. The Mini Pro 2 is the second generation super compact smart charger and just like its larger brother EO basic the mini is high quality and reliable. If you’re after a discrete, modern looking charger with clever charging options, the Mini Pro 2 would be hard to ignore. It is technically a single phase charger, however it has a maximum charging power of 7kW or 32A but can be ramped down if your supply circuit is limited. It’s set up and controlled through the Wifi with the EO app and shows charging rate for right now and also logs the charging history.
ZJ Beny was founded early in 2011, and is extremely familiar to solar installers as a manufacturer of reliable and fairly budget friendly solar isolators and surge protection equipent. The first EV charger from the company is the BCP series, which promises a bunch of features at a very reasonable price. Tedious as all that is, with a price tag as low as $650 (including CT metre), it’s by far the best value smart EV charger on the market. The whole design feels a bit cheap though with the snap on covering, the plastic housing and retro looking DLB (Dynamic Load Balancing) module, but most users won’t mind the looks. But in order to support the dynamic solar only charging modes, another additional CT clamp is needed and an optional advanced Solar DLB box is required. You can equip your charger with either single or 3 phase power in single or 3 phase versions with adjustable power from 1.3kW to 22kW single phase and fully adjustable power from between 4.1kW and 22kW 3 phase, and with connector selection available as untethered and tethered with 6m (18ft) charging cable and associated adaptors. In particular, on Smart versions WiFi and Bluetooth is standard, and OCPP 1.6 Json communication protocol is optional (see model selection chart in the datasheet). The Z-Box App that you could set up and monitor the charger from looks nice, and has a nice simple easy to use interface and an enormous range of configuration options.
The FIMER Flexa AC Wallbox is a high-performance smart EV charger designed and manufactured by one of the world’s leading power conversion equipment providers. The Flexa is available in tethered and non-tethered versions and four different power ratings, including 3.7kW or 7.4kW single-phase and 11kW or 22kW 3-phase options. These categories include the Stand-alone, Future Net and Inverter Net category. The load balancing and the smart communication are the features which exist only in the Future Net and Inverter Net options. The Future Net variant is customarily applicable to surveillance and control from a distance, and supports 3G/4G, WiFi, Ethernet, and OCPP 1.6 Json communication protocol. The Inverter Net version adds all the facets contained in the Future Net model and also allows to connect directly to the FIMER React 2 home solar battery system. In addition, it is incorporated with load balancing and smart scheduling and an AC relay switch besides digital input and output.
The Wallbox Pular Plus is great for those looking for a compact and discrete EV charger that can be remotely controlled and locked. The Wallbox app is Google and Alexa compatible and enables scheduled charging times to take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity rates. The Wallbox Pulsar plus now also features load balancing when used in conjunction with an add-on energy meter, called the EMS (energy management system). The EMS enables several smart functions including Power boost, Eco-mode and dynamic power sharing which adjusts the charging rate when multiple chargers are used from the one grid connection to ensure it does not overload the supply. Power boost mode enables the system to charge at the maximum rate when the other loads are low.
OCULAR is a popular EV charger company based in Australia which has developed a wide range of EV chargers for residential and commercial applications, including high-power DC chargers. The IQ Wallbox is the first Smart EV charger produced by Ocular and is available in either two sizes, single-phase 7.4kW or 3-phase 22kW. The sleek black, tear-drop shaped charger features a clear 2.8-inch LCD display, RFID, Ethernet and Wifi, and, more importantly, OPCC1.6J making it suitable for the Charge HQ app-based control system for solar charging optimisation. Load balancing is also available, but it is unclear whether the CT clamp or external monitoring hardware is supplied or needs to be purchased separately. The maximum charge current is also adjustable via internal dip switches.
The JuiceBox 40 from Enel x is one of the most popular EV chargers in North America and is designed specifically for the US market. The charger is very affordable and rated higher than most, with a maximum charge rate of 40A or 9.6kW at 240V. Other features include scheduled charging, inbuilt WiFi and voice control via Google or Alexa. The Juicebox load-balancing feature is unique in that it is software controlled and does not require external CT metering. This is great when multiple chargers are connected to one grid supply point, but it will not enable dynamic load-balancing with a single charger. Juicebox owners can also participate in smart grid programs to enable charging from renewable sources and reduce emissions.
